FLASH FLOODS LEAVE OVER 92 FAMILIES HOMELESS
…Councilor calls for DMMU’S aid for victims
By SIMON MUNTEMBA PERSISTENT flash floods following torrential rains experienced in most parts of the country has left 92 houses submerged while 11 collapsed in Matero's Kapwepwe ward 25 in Lusaka.
Ward Councillor, Patrick Salubusa, who confirmed the development to the Daily Nation said the floods experienced in Lusaka were serious which required quick response from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).
He describe the situation as a disaster since some families were left destitute with no food and shelter.
Mr Salubusa said all the affected families were from his ward who needed urgent gov- ernment assistance.
“I have just written a letter to DMMU to make recommendations as regards to how the victims should be assisted.
“In Lilanda Estate, the disaster was too much such that some families were quickly accommodated at Lilanda Lodge 92 houses were submerged in water while 11 collapsed in Matero's Kapwepwe ward 25,” Mr Salubusa said.
The rains have left a trail of destruction leaving several houses submerged while some tombstones at Chingwere cemetery were partially damaged.
The worst hit areas were the Central Business District (CBD), the Light and Heavy Industrial areas including a number of Townships in Lusaka.
On Monday Lusaka District Commissioner, Captain Davison Mulenga told the Daily Nation that over 30 households were in dire need of food aid following flash floods being experienced in Lusaka.
