By MUKOSELA KASALWE RESIDENTS of Ngwerere Ward in Lusaka’s Garden Compound have embarked on clearing blocked drainages and making temporal ones for easy flow rain water following torrential rains.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Ngwerere Councillor Adrian Banda said only a few houses were affected by the floods experienced in the compound following the heavy rains being experienced in Lusaka and other parts of the country.

Mr. Banda said preventive measures were put in place before the onset of the rain adding that a temporal action plan was constituted to mitigate further flooding.

He expressed gratitude to the community for heeding the call to participate in the quest to make the environment habitable and clean for all residents.

“Today (yesterday) I led a team of residents in the unblocking and creation of temporal drainage system. My office is grateful for the participation of the community in the quest to make our environment habitable and clean,” he said.

Mr Banda said all residents with the help of the engineering department of Lusaka City Council agreed to come up with a new drainage system that would see to it that those houses which were affected by floods do not get submerged.

Mr Banda said last year, over 50 houses were submerged in floods due to heavy rains compared to this year were the area has recorded only five households affected.
