ETHICAL LEADERSHIP KEY TO DEVELOPMENT - VEEP

- By PRINCE CHIBAWAH

VICE President Inonge Wina says government will champion good corporate governance principles as fundamental ingredients for growing Zambia’s economy.

Ms Wina said tenets of good corporate governance were key to fighting corruption in the country.

Ms Wina said this in a speech read on her behalf by the minister in the office of the Vice President, Silvia Chalikosa during a breakfast meeting organised by the Institute of Directors of Zambia which was held at Southern Sun Ridgway hotel in Lusaka this week.

Ms Wina revealed that President Edgar Lungu’s administration would continue to prioritise ethical leadership as a key value for ensuring promotion of coordinated development. “This is attested by continuously enhancing the capacity of ministers and controlling officers in good financial governance. Further, the introduction performance contracts amongst senior government officials underscores this critical desire to have controlling officers who are accountable in their execution of duties,” she said.

Ms Wina also commended Institute of Directors of Zambia for creating opportunities to recognise individuals for their effort in promoting excellent corporate governance practices in the country. “It is my hope that more directors will take up membership of the institute and use it to effectively contribute to the championing of corporate governance. As members of the Institute you have a responsibility to partner with government in its efforts of uplifting the quality of life of our people,” said Ms Wina. Earlier, Institute of Directors of Zambia, President Professor Esther Nkandu said the Institute had been encouraged by government’s efforts in ensuring ethical leadership, transparency and accountability as anchor for creating a conducive environment for development. “We have been following with keen interest the numerous strides that government has been undertaking to improve legislation in the country. In view of these development the theme for our breakfast is ‘the effect of legislation on corporate governance in Zambia’,” said Prof Nkandu.
