Poor works on new market slammed
POOR workmanship on the recently constructed Nkolonga market in Mkushi has resulted in some compartments collapsing even before official launch, Chalata ward councillor Moses Manjimela has said.
Mr Manjimela said in an interview with the Daily Nation that this problem shows that the named contractor who built the market structure did not do a good job. Councillor Manjimela said there was need for the contractor to re-do the project so that the structure could be strengthened to ensure that it was safe for marketeers. Redoing the works would avert unnecessary disaster, he stressed.
“I am appealing to the relevant authorities to re-engage the named contractor to re-do the job to the expectations of both the community and government. It’s just too early to start experiencing such setbacks. Mr. Manjimela said.
Mr Manjimela further said the marketeers were expected to be conducting their businesses in a safe and conducive environment without worries or fears of the structure collapsing.
He wondered why the contractor built the structure without toilets, saying the market building was supposed to have four toilets, but instead had only two that were constructed by the community with the help of the local authority.
Councillor Manjimela commended the community and the council for their contributions towards construction of the two toilets at the trading centre.
