KCC slashes rental arrears

Kitwe City Council has reduced monthly rental charges for shops by an average of 21 percent. This was announced by Kitwe Mayor Christoper Kango’mbe.

By KELVIN SIABANA WE have started sensitisat­ion campaigns to ensure the public and council employees clearly understand­s Statutory Instrument (SI) number 10 of 2018 concerning street vending and public nuisances, says Ndola City Council public relations manager, Tilyenji Mwanza.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Ms Mwanza said the public to have a better and clear understand­ing of the SI, the local authority had partnered with some community radio stations in the city to sensitise masses about the law.

The Ministry of Local Government and Housing has amended Statutory Instrument number 54 of 1992 that strengthen­s laws against street vending and public nuisances.

The new Act comes with 33 more new offences which include among them conducting street business or selling ready meals in a van or any other places that are not licensed, selling of fruits and vegetables from the ground, open vans or wheelbarro­ws and having no litter bin in registered public transport.

In another developmen­t, Ndola City Council is constructi­ng a waste inlet at Main Masala Market at a cost of K120 000.

Ms Mwanza said funds for the project had been sourced from the equalisati­on local authority fund.

She said the waste inlet, which is under constructi­on with almost 50 percent of the works done, would cater for marketeers and other traders.

"Main Masala market is one of the biggest markets on the Copperbelt which hosts various marketeers and other traders from different parts of the province because it is a hive of different business activities for players in the informal sector, Ms Mwanza said.

She called for change of mindset among Ndola residents regarding the dumping of waste in public places.
