Mkushi councillor cries for boreholes
By PETER MALASHA NSHINSO Ward Councillor in Mkshi Xaviour Chisenga has appealed to government to sink boreholes in the area.
Mr. Chisenga told the Daily Nation in an interview that there was need for government to install boreholes in his ward so that residents could have access to safe and clean water.
Mr. Chisenga said many people in the area depended on water from streams that dried up in the dry season and was contaminated.
Councillor Chisenga said the only three boreholes in the area had broken down and there was no access to clean water.
“We need to repair the three boreholes that are not functional so that they get back to normal function. We need about five more in a bid to improve access to clean and safe water for people in the ward.” Mr Chisenga said.
But Mkushi District Council chairman Evans Bwalya said Nshinso ward was one of the beneficiaries of boreholes drilling programme in the district under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
He said currently the programme had been suspended due to the season not being conducive for sinking of the water machines.
“I am urging all members of the community who benefit from water supply from boreholes to have a sense of belonging and contribute a little towards boreholes maintenance.
“People should not always wait for the local authority to repair the broken down boreholes but use initiative because the council may take long to repair due to many responsibilities,” Mr. Bwalya said
Mr. Bwalya has also appealed to beneficiaries of boreholes to cultivate a sense of ownership and responsibility because they were their property.
