Residents’ bad habits irk civic leader
By LINDA SOKO TEMBO SOME residents in my ward are throwing garbage anyhow despite the area recording cholera cases, says Mandevu Constituency’s Justin Kabwe Ward 21 Councillor, Teddy Mwaba
In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Mwaba charged that most perpetrators were deliberately dumping garbage in undesignated places including streets and drainages to avoid subscribing to Community-Based Enterprises (CBEs).
Mr Mwaba appealed to the residents to be responsible for the waste that they generated to ensure that it was not thrown anyhow to avoid keeping the environment dirty.
“Most residents are not pay- ing subscription fees to the CBEs and this has proved very difficult for us as civic leaders.
“We are supposed to be responsible for the waste that we generate and the sad thing is that our people do not take interest of subscribing to the CBEs the council has contracted, the city is growing and the council cannot manage to collect litter everywhere,” Mr Mwaba said.
He however said plans were underway for the ward to buy a solid waste collector truck using Ward Development Funds that will help in collecting garbage in his ward.
Mr Mwaba emphasised on the need by residents to keep the environment clean saying no one would do it for them.
