UPND condemned for shunning Women’s day

- By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

NORTH Western Province Patriotic Front chairperson, Jackson Kungo has condemned UPND and its leadership for shunning the international Women's day celebrations in the province.

He said it is disappointing to see that none of the members from the UPND, including its elected Members of parliament, councillors and council chairmen were present.

He said UPND should not think it is the PF that declared the day and organised the commemorations.

"As a party in the province we condemn in the strongest terms the move by the UPND to shun the big day for our mothers and sisters. It is uncalled for and should be condemned by all well meaning Zambians," Mr Kungo said.

He said no one will succeed in underestimating the tradition of celebrating Women's Day and the PF shall not discourage the women to celebrate because they know it is their duty to observe it.

"So, our colleagues in the UPND should not think it is the PF as I earlier stated that organised or declared the event but the United Nations, " he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Kungo has implored the youth in the province to turn in large numbers regardless of their political affiliation and participate in the Youth Day celebrations slated for Monday.

He said public functions should not be politicised by a section of stakeholders in the political arena and the civil society because it s an obligation of every Zambian to take part in such functions.

Among the political parties that participated in this year's International Women's Day commemorations were the ruling Patriotic Front, the Movement for Multiparty Democracy, Forum for Democracy and Development and the National Democratic Congress.
