MENTALLY CHALLENGED PEOPLE MARGINALISED- HOSPITAL SUPERINTENDENT

- By LINDA SOKO TEMBO

MENTALLY challenged people are marginalised and stigmatised by society, says Chainama East Correctional Hospital Superintendent, Chileshe Makwala

Ms Makwala explained that Chainama East Correctional Hospital housed both women, men and young people who after rehabilitation could be very instrumental to the development of the country.

Ms Makwala made the remarks on Saturday during International Women’s Day after a group of housewives calling themselves Wives of Noble Character (WNC) donated assorted foodstuffs worth K2,000 and K1,000 cash to the Correctional hospital.

“We wish to applaud your organisation for coming and spending time with one of the marginalised people in society.

“You will bear with me that mentally challenged people in society are marginalised and stigmatized by society,” said Ms Makwala She expressed happiness that the institution would be empowered materially and spiritually by the WNC.

Speaking earlier WNC president, Favor Mwaba said as women they felt obliged to present the foodstuffs and cash which will go towards repairing the institution’s stove as they were cooking using firewood.

Ms Mwaba explained that WNC was reaching out to the inmates so that they could share the love of Christ through sharing God’s word so that they would know that despite their status, God still loved them and had a plan for them.

She said as WNC their intention was to start helping the inmates integrate back into society by helping them get established.
