Out of 2000 small-scale mining licences issued, less than 20 mines operating

-

By MAILESI BANDA GOVERNMENT has threatened to revoke idle mining licences to promote investments in the mining sector of Zambia.

Mines and Minerals Development Minister Richard Musukwa said even after the government had issued in excess of 2000 small-scale mining licences less than 20 mines have been operational.

The minister said the number of mines operational against those issued with licences was disadvantaging as the country had not been benefiting from the natural resources.

Speaking when he officially opened the Pan African Geological Survey training on artisanal and small scale mining in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Musukwa said in order to provide security of tenure to licence holders Government would ensure that the licence holders follow obligations.

“Government will continue to provide security of tenure to licence holders in order for them to operate and invest, we will also ensure that they oblige to the provisions of the licences.

"Idle licences, that are being held for speculative reasons whether small scale or large scale mining licences will be revoked,” he said.

The minister pledged Government’s commitment to ensure licence they continue to encourage investments in the mining sector not only for copper production but also exploitation of other minerals mostly mined by Artisanal small scale miners.

"Government hopes to spur development of other sectors by contributing to economic diversification and job creation.

“With the diversification of mineral production and enhanced productivity of artisanal small mining, I am confident that Zambia will continue to develop the standards of living of our people," he said.

And European Union (EU) head of cooperation Gianluca Azzoni said EU was committed to supporting the government in the development of the mining sector.

"We welcome the steps made by Government to tackle illegal mining and facilitate licensing for artisanal mining cooperating which is key to the development of inclusive value chains, he said.
