THE prize money for winning the 2018 MTN-FAZ Super League has doubled with the champions walking away with K500, 000.

MTN Zambia chief executive officer Charles Molapisi announced the increase in prize money, saying the move was as a result of improved performance of the national team and league teams which he linked to good investment.

“We have been the biggest supporters of Zambian football and we are looking at the future with optimism. Our support for the sport came at a time when most organisations were pulling back from football,

“Today, football has regained its spot as the nation’s number one game and unifier of all Zambians,” Molapisi said.

Molapisi clarified that MTN was ready to embrace new sponsors with the aim to improve the league.

This follows the announcement of the US$4.5 million sponsorship package over three years by key sponsors MTN Zambia, during a media briefing held at their headquarters in Lusaka yesterday.

The prize money is a 100 percent increment from the previous K250, 000 while the package leaped to US$4.5 million from the preceding US$3 million.

A total of US$1.5 million per year of which US$300,000 would be in kind. The national team will benefit K750, 000 and the remaining will go towards the Super League.

And FAZ president Andrew Kamanga announced that Super League clubs would now receive K200, 000 from previous K7, 000 which will be handed-out in three phases.

Meanwhile, Kamanga said only non-telecom companies were welcome to push in their sponsorship.

“MTN are our main league sponsors, but this time the rights are not exclusive, only against their fellow telecom companies. Other sponsors are welcome but terms and conditions have to be discussed before approval,” he explained.
