School gets K26,000 shot in the arm

…Chisomo ward councillor donates towards construction of 1x3 classroom block

- By PETER MALASHA

CHISOMO ward councillor Peter Mukosha in Serenje has donated building materials worth K26, 000 towards construction of a 1x3 classroom block at Chisomo Primary School.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr. Mukosha said he had made the donation because he was duty bound, adding that as a civic leader he had a social responsibility to plough back in the community as well as fulfil campaign promises.

Mr. Mukosha said construction of the 1x3 classroom block would go a long way in enhancing the process of upgrading the school from primary to a secondary.

He said if the 1x3 classroom block was constructed, it would cater for grades10, 11 and 12 classes in Chief Chisomo’s area which was lacking secondary school infrastructure development.

“Currently, pupils who pass to go to grade 10 are taken to either Ibolelo or Serenje Boys Secondary School which is about 110km from Chisomo. The area has only three primary schools which include Chimbaya and Kaombe.

“It is in this regard that I have donated 120 pockets of cement and 110 roofing sheets in a bid to expand the school structure,” Mr. Mukosha said.

He noted that sponsoring senior secondary school pupils to Ibolelo and Serenje Boys Secondary Schools was costly on the part of parents.

He added that once the structure became operational, it would help out in reducing early marriages in the chiefdom because a good number of youths would be accommodated and kept busy with studies.

Mr. Mukosha said when the structure was completed, it would be named Edgar Chagwa Lungu block as a goodwill gesture to President Lungu for giving him and other youths opportunity to work under his administration.

Mr. Mukosha is expecting the 1x3 classroom block to be completed by June this year.

The community, would also contribute 25percent of the materials upfront towards the project.

And Chisomo Primary School head teacher Jonathan Musumba said the move by Mr Musonda was timely.

Mr. Musumba who is Parent Teachers Association (PTA) secretary said both the school administration and PTA had appreciated the councillor’s generosity which was a step ahead in opening grade 10 class next year.

Mr. Musumba said soon after the rains, the community would start moulding over 25,000 blocks for the same project.

“The eight sections of the community in the area have been segmented and given targets to mould over 3,000 timber bricks. A situation were grade 10 pupils are taken to other secondary schools from the ward will be a bygone.” Mr. Musumba said.
