Ching’angu jailed 2 months

- By JUSTINA MULENGA

FORMER Zambian boxing heavyweight champion Joseph 'No Pressure' Ching’angu has been sentenced two months imprisonment with hard labour for trafficking in cannabis.

Magistrate Betty Malupenga yesterday jailed Chingangu when he appeared for sentencing after the matter was adjourned last week.

In jailing Ching’angu, Ms Malupenga said she had taken into account that he was the first offender who readily admitted the charge.

Chingangu 52, of Chilenje Township in Lusaka, was arrested on February 20 together with three others in Chibolya compound after an operation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).

In his mitigation, Chingangu asked for the court’s lenience as the prison was not a good place to be.

He said he had learnt that it was not a good thing to be found with marijuana and that he would teach others of the dangers of being in possession of such substance.

He also said his wife suffered a stroke and he was the one looking after their six children.

This is the fourth time Chingangu is being found wanting for breaking the law.

In 2016, the former boxer was arrested for aggravated robbery but was acquitted.

Months later an angry mob of University of Zambia (UNZA) students applied instant justice by beating him for allegedly stealing a lap at one of the rooms in campus.
