Luanshya private varsity shut
Vice-chancellor of the institution Michael Mukanga was taken to Luanshya Central Police for questioning, but was not detained. The university was offering health related courses that had not been approved by the HPCZ and had already enrolled students for the April 2018 classes. HPCZ legal Counsel Frank Lungu said the University was offer- ing health related courses illegally and was charging the students for such courses. Speaking during an impromptu visit to the University, Mr. Lungu said the Vice Chancellor’s decision to go ahead with programmes was not in order. “Having a health institution which is not regulated and it’s offering unregistered courses can lead to fatalities to the patients who are our primary concern, hence, as a council, we are shutting down this institution with the aim of protecting the lives of our patients in the country. “A lot of parents have invested so much money in their children’s education and it will be very unfair to them to discover that their child cannot get employed under any health care institution because they attained an education at an institution that was not licenced, “he explained. Mr Lungu further said the environment was not conducive to run any health related courses He therefore, declared the institution closed after Mr. Mukanga confirmed that he was offering courses that were not registered with the council. Mr Mukanga said his institution was affiliated to a university in Lusaka and acknowledged having not registered the institution. He said he was in the process of registering the medical university with HPCZ.
