Bauleni residents riot over suspected ritual killer

- By NATION REPORTER

POLICE officers from Bauleni police post last night fought running battles with irate residents who attempted to burn the facility after word went round that a suspected ritual killer who had tried to abduct a child had been arrested and detained there.

An instant justice mob started by burning the vehicle which was used by the suspected killer to ashes before blocking the roads leading to the police post.

The residents then turned their anger on the police officers and demanded that the suspected ritual killer be handed to them so that they could "crucify" him as they did not trust the police officers.

Stones rattled the police post as officers fought to subdue the unruly residents who vowed not to return to their homes until the suspected ritual killer was handed to them and after sensing the increasing tension, police mobilized and whisked the suspect away and took him to Woodlands police station to quell the situation.

A check at the Bauleni police post by the Daily Nation found police in riot gear keeping vigil at the premises as residents continued lurking for an opportunity to attack but slowly returned to their homes after discovering that the suspect had been sneaked out and taken to another police station.

At Woodlands police station where Chishimba Kambwili was detained yesterday, a heavy presence of police officers prevented anyone from getting into the premises.
