COMPEL your parents to open bank accounts for you if your future is to be secured, a financial expert in North Western Province has urged school going children
Lizzy Tewu said there was need to develop values of saving at a tender age even when one had low income levels.
Speaking during the launch of the financial literacy week in Solwezi yesterday, Ms Tewu who is also Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) Solwezi branch manager, also urged parents to improve on the culture of saving money.
She stated that there was need for parents and guardians to start saving money for their children at an early age as it reduces pressure whenever they (children) qualify to the next grade.
"Because saving will not only help one to invest in their lives but also give one a better future where they can depend on in times of financial challenges,” Ms Tewu said.
And gracing the event, Solwezi District Commissioner, Rosemary Kamalonga emphasised on the need for young people to be well informed about financial literacy in the country.
Ms Kamalonga stated that there was need to sensitise young people on the importance of financial literacy if they were to become responsible citizens that will contribute to the economic development of the country.
"This is because for the second year running, the financial literacy week commemoration is being driven by the Bankers Association of Zambia in conjunction with various stakeholders such as government, the Bank of Zambia and the pensions and insurance association,” Ms Kamakonga said. She said with concerted efforts on financial inclusion and financial awareness programmes the sector was bound to grow and increase its contribution to Gross Domestic Products (GDP).
This year's financial literacy week was being held under the theme “Save, Invest, Insure for a better life".
