Sick Kambwili seeks court order to release him

- By NATION REPORTER

ROAN Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili wants the Lusaka High Court to order the officer in charge at Woodlands police station to release him and also show cause why he is being held despite his poor health.

On behalf of Mr Kambwili, his lawyer, Mr Christopher Mundia, swore the affidavit in support of notice of motion for writ of habeas corpus and subjiciendum on account that Mr Kambwili was unable to swear the same due to police holding.

Mr Kambwili sued the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the state alleging that there was no valid reason for his detention.

He claimed that on March 22, 2018, he was summoned by the ACC where he was formally arrested on two counts of obtaining money by false pretences and 37 counts of being found with property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Mr Kambwili claimed to have long existing ailments of diabetes, hypertension with heart problem, gout and stomach acid problems and that his diabetes requires regular insulin injections to prevent him falling into hypoglycaemia.

Mr Kambwili claimed that the offences with which he was charged with were bailable and that he had available sureties to secure his release and attendance at any court yet bond was denied.

He claimed that he was discharged from a South African medical facility on March 21 2018 and was supposed to proceed to recover on bed rest in his house but was instead detained by ACC at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola thereby aggravating his medical condition.

Meanwhile, Special Advisor to Mr Kambwili Chris Zimba confirmed that the Roan Constituency MP was taken to a private medical institution on Thursday evening after failing ill at Woodlands Police station where he was detained.
