TYRANNICAL FRED M’MEMBE AT HIS BEST

THE announcement that Fred M’membe is Presidential candidate, of the socialist party, even before the party has proper structures that should elect the leadership should not shock anybody. This is Fred at his best.

It is common knowledge that socialism is synonymous with central control which does not allow debate and democratic practice.

Those old enough will recall the day of socialist UNIP which degenerated into a vicious one party state from which this country was liberate in 1991.

Look around the world, where has socialism succeeded ? Nowhere. Look at Venezuela, a country rich in oil and other resources, but currently undergoing severe upheaval because the state chose the socialist route.

Even the Cuban Ambassador who officiated at the launch of the party last Saturday will admit that the country has serious economic crisis as a result of a system that reposes all the power in the state.

This country went through so many difficulties at the time Dr. Kaunda was in power and nobody in his right mind would want to go back to that era of shortages which the Venezuelans are undergoing at the moment.

We have gone past that era and should be moving towards greater liberalisation because an aggregation of effort of free people is the workable model that will develop this country.
