Let’s set stage for accountable governance - Hamududu
By NATION REPORTER THERE is need for the Zambian constitution to set the stage for good and accountable governance, Party for National Unity (PNU) leader Highvie Hamududu has said.
In an interview, Mr Hamududu, who is former UPND Bweengwa Member of Parliament noted that following Zambia’s dismal post-independence governance, it was evident that the country’s problems emanate from a constitution which has a weak accountability demands on leadership.
He said the current constitution bestows governance on the benevolence of leaders at the expense of strengthening institutions of governance.
“What has existed during our post-independence era and especially from the time of declaration of one-party state republic in 1972, has simply been a constitutional dictatorship sustained by a critical mass of cheer leaders.
“Over the years, this has been consciously and unconsciously been accepted as a norm in our society and political landscape, to the detriment of our progress as a country. “Unfortunately, nothing changed from the time of the re-introduction of multiparty democracy in 1990,” said Mr Hamududu.
He added, “Going forward, it must be understood that our country can only make remarkable and sustainable progress only if we have in place, a legal environment of good and accountable governance, clearly provided for in our constitution, first and foremost.’
He said it was high time that the interest of posterity take precedence over narrow and shortterm interests.
