Chaisa pit latrines in health poser

By NATION REPORTER THE majority of households in Chaisa compound have no toilets while existing pit latrines are full, posing a health hazard for most residents, says Chaisa Ward 20 Councillor Ruth Phiri

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Ms Phiri disclosed that the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LSWC) has since embarked on a project to construct the sewer network in the area so that the residents could have Àushable toilets.

Ms Phiri said the project started last year in October adding that 50 percent of the works had been done.

She however explained that the works are on hold waiting to compensate some households where the pipes are supposed to be set up.

“The project is being done by LWSC funded by government to do the sewer network in the community and they have already done half way and the project is currently on hold we are waiting for funding from government to compensate the people selling along the road.

“Once they are compensate­d the contractor will move back on site and I ‘am hopeful that the funding to compensate the traders will be available by the end of this month and hopefully by June this year the project will be complete,” Ms Phiri said. She explained that the putting up of the main sewer line will run from the railway line, the boundary between Mandevu and Chaisa then it will join Katima Mulilo road and Mount Meru fillinJ Station cominJ towards Mandevu junction.

Ms Phiri said that once the connection of the sewer pipe is completed residents will be able to have Àushable toilets addinJ that LWSC will embark on another project where every household will also be connected to tap water.

She said this was aimed at ensuring that the residents of Chaisa had proper sanitary conditions.
