GOVERNMENT should step in and protect the people of Namwala whose livelihoods have been shattered with the fencing off of over 1, 500 hectares of grazing land by embattled UPND leader, Hakainde Hichilema, the opposition has demanded.

Namwala District Commissioner, Mary Sakala told the Daily Nation in Namwala that a meeting held to discuss the matter had advised Mr Hichilema to stop the fencing of the land because that was where locals collect herbal medicines and graze their animals.

The opposition said it was disheartening that Mr Hichilema had selfishly ignored such sound advice, adding that it was a clear sign that the UPND leader was “heartless.”

Both Zambia Republican Party (ZRP) president, Wright Musoma and Enoch Tonga of the 3rd Liberation Movement (3rd LM), who commended the Daily Nation for the expose’ called on authorities to step in and take charge of the situation.

The opposition leaders charged in separate interviews that shattering livelihoods in the manner the UPND leader had done was more evil than witchcraft.

They both wondered how a leader would turn against people who had given him votes in previous elections and what he would do to the nation if handed the instruments of power.

“I almost cried when I read about what this man is doing, honestly even if it’s selfishness this is too much, more evil than witchcraft,” said Mr Tonga.

Mr Musoma said “seriously, he has done this to the people who have been giving him votes in the previous elections? This is a sign that the man is heartless.”

Mr Tonga insisted that Government should step in, investigate the matter and see to it that livelihoods were protected.

He reiterated that the fact that locals had been collecting their herbal medicines from the said land should be of paramount importance.

Mr Tonga charged that government should also investigate the circumstances under which such land was given to Mr Hichilema.
