BP petition: Daily Nation praised over Saturnia

- By NATION REPORTER

ENGLISH free-lance journalist Daniel James has praised the Daily Nation newspaper for its efforts in helping his petition to compel BP to pay retirement packages to its former employees in Zambia.

Mr James said by accurately exposing the corporate fraud at the Saturnia Regna Pension Fund which left retirees in limbo for over 20 years, the Daily Nation was helping his petition to push for the retirees’ payments.

Meanwhile, the number of people who have signed the petition has continued swelling with over 1,500 having signed the petition as at yesterday to compel former BP International chief executive officer Lord John Browne to ensure that poor Zambians who served the company were given their dues.

The campaign dubbed “Ask BP to pay their ex-employees in Zambia” was started by freelance journalist, Daniel James, after visiting Zambia some months ago to investigate the Saturnia fraud which has left pensioners stranded, years after leaving their jobs.

Mr. James said he was motivated to start the campaign after listening to the predicament that had befallen workers who laboured to make money for BP-Zambia but had been left in the cold as those holding their monies were simply not willing to pay them.

He said upon his return to England, he was left with no option but to petition former BP International CEO Lord John Browne to ensure that the monies owed to the poor Zambians who faithfully worked for the company was given to them.

After the story about the petition which came out last week, Mr. James said he was happy that the petition had received the recognition it deserved and paid tribute to the paper for supplementing his efforts in ensuring that the poor Zambians received justice over what they were owed by their former employers.

“I wanted to share an exciting update about a petition I signed on Change.org: Lord John Browne (CEO of BP International at the time): BP to pay their ex-employees in Zambia their pension. BP pensions petition makes front pages in Zambia.
