CHIEF MUMENA DONATES K15,000 TO SCHOOL
CHIEF Mumena of the Kaonde people in Kalumbila district in North-Western Province has donated K15, 000 to Kansanshi Primary School in Solwezi towards the purchase of desks at the school.
And Chief Mumena has called on well-wishers and the corporate world to come on board and supplement government’s efforts in improving the delivery of education to pupils at the school.
He expressed sadness that the school which has a total enrolment of 585 pupils only has 24 desks to cater for all the pupils.
The traditional leader made the donation during the fundraising dinner held at Royal hotel to raise about K776, 000 for various projects at Kansanshi primary school.
Among the projects earmarked to be implemented is the construction of three staff houses at a cost of K600, 000, connection of electricity to the school at a cost of K76, 000, connection of water at a cost of K40, 000 and procurement of desks at a cost of K60, 000.
“We need to think outside the box, otherwise we will not get anywhere,” Chief Mumena said.
He said since inception in 2015, Kansanshi primary school had seen an increase in enrolment levels over the years hence the need to improve the school infrastructure.
He commended government for releasing K133, 000 towards the construction of a 1x2 classroom block at the school.
“The school has double streams from grades one to four and single stream from grade five to seven and this entails that the school is growing and there is need for more classroom space and the target that we have is to make learning and teaching very conducive,” he said.
The traditional leader also called for the speedy implementation of the devolved functions under the decentralisation programme so that some of the problems facing public institutions like schools could be addressed locally through the local authorities.
He said there was need to quickly come up with concepts that were going to deal with devolved functions.
"And the sooner we do this, I think it is going to help us address some of the problems schools like Kansanshi primary school are facing,” he said.

Ms Malopa also appealed to well-wishers to help the school sink a borehole to enable teachers and pupils have access to clean drinking water.
Over K43, 000 was raised in pledges from various individuals to help the school address some of its challenges.
