Call for clean, safe drinking water

-

OUR area has a serious water problem that people are forced to share water points with cattle and goats, a ward councillor in Chongwe has lamented.

Lwimba ward area councillor Vincent Mwachiyeya said this during a sharing event held in his ward by Beacon of Sharing Centre, an NGO based in Chongwe.

“We would like to thank you for sharing clothes and food, but we appeal to you to consider other challenges that we face. One major problem is insufficient water points with safe and clean water,” he said.

Headman Chibwalu of Chibwalu village told the Daily Nation in an interview that the councillor’s appeal was appropriate.

“I just have one working borehole in my village with more than 250 households. This problem needs urgent attention and the councillor’s appeal must reach the powers that be and well wishes. Please come to our aid before we begin to succumb to water borne diseases,” he said.

Meanwhile, Beacon of Sharing President and founder Mr Oscar Kaleya, who was with secretary general Dube Ratohwa, called on the community to learn to share.

“We all have what to give and should obey Christ’s call to be good Samaritans who give out of a sense of love and not as a duty or obligation.

Sharing must be part of our culture. This is our message even as we share what many well-wishers have donated to the organisation,” he said.
