Look after drainage, John Howard residents told

-

By NATION REPORTER RESIDENTS of John Howard in Lusaka have been advised to take care of the drainage system under construction to avoid floods during the rainy season.

In an interview, John Howard Ward Three Councillor Kafula Mutale said the drainage system was being constructed at a cost of K240, 000 from the Ward Development Fund (WDF) to improve water flow in the rainy season.

Mr. Mutale said the ward had been experiencing severe floods every year and it was time to act to avoid flooding.

“We thought of starting to work on the drainages and not to wait for another rainy reason. We want to do a proper drainage system that will join the main drainage that takes water to Blue Water Dam. That’s the project underway and it started a few weeks ago.

“It will take about eight to 10 weeks, costing us slightly above K240, 000 and we are trying to use the WDF,” Mr Mutale said.

He appealed to the residents to avoid throwing garbage in the drainages, adding that they should also subscribe to the Community Based Enterprises (CBEs) in their respective areas.

“Throwing garbage illegally is an offence and they can be taken to the Fast Track Court. We don’t want to come to that when we can prevent it. Let’s put garbage in designated areas and wait for the council to collect it,” he said.
