NGO hails solar hammer mills project
SOLAR powered hammer mills will help shorten distance people are covering to access milling services, the Society for Women and Aids in Zambia (SWAAZ) has said. SWAAZ Muchinga Province coordinator Brian Kaluba said the hammermills would greatly bring milling services closer to the communities.
“As Society for Women and Aids in Zambia (SWAAZ) in Muchinga Province, we would like thank the PF government through the Presidential Milling Initiative for providing hammer mills dotted across the province,” said Kaluba
Mr Kaluba further noted that provision of solar hammers would help curtail the escalating prices of mealie meal and contribute to job creation through cooperatives.
“SWAAZ in Isoka district is impressed that so far four 4 youths and two 2 women from our organisation have been employed through the Presidential Milling initiative,’’ said Kaluba.
He further said the Presidential Milling Initiative had potential to reduce poverty and increase household income for cooperative members and the community. “Provision of these hammer mills is a clear testimony of the Patriotic Front government’s resolve to improve lives of people from all walks of life,” said Kaluba. Mr Kaluba urged coop-
eratives that had benefitted from Presidential Milling Initiative to use funds realised from solar mills prudently for them to expand their businesses for the benefit of members.
Meanwhile, Mr Kaluba has called on government to consider appointing more youths and women to various decision making positions.
‘’As an organisation interested in the welfare of Women and Youths, we feel the role of women and Youths in complimenting government efforts should be recognised as a powerful tool that should be used to keep in touch with the grassroots.
“we therefore appeal to government to appoint more women and youths in decision making position such as district commissioners, permanent secretaries etc,” said Kaluba
