PIRATE TAXIS CHOKE LUANSHYA

- By NATION REPORTER

LUANSHYA District Commissioner, Joel Chibuye has warned against pirating vehicles as taxis in the district.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr. Chibuye stated that he had noticed with disappointment with the rising number of vehicles operating as unregistered taxis and distorting order in town.

He lamented that most of the vehicles that were pirating in the district belonged to civil servants. “Most of these vehicles you see pirating in Luanshya district belong to civil servants who are supposed to be the drivers of sanity in the town. Civil servants are supposed to promote and protect the law and not use their stand in society to frustrate it,” he said.

He said civil servants were supposed to help government reduce lawlessness instead of being the ones breaking the law. The explained that all citizens wishing to operate taxis, must register them as public service vehicles which must bear red registration numbers. They also required to pay a levy.

Mr Chibuye therefore sounded a warning against the perpetrators stating that the law enforcement agencies will punish anyone that will be found wanting.

Meanwhile, Mr Chibuye also expressed concern over the increased number of street kids in the town centre and other public places.

He said the increasing number of street kids was “extremely” alarming as it would bring a rise in thefts. Mr Chibuye appealed to parents and guardians to ensure that their children remained at home instead of having them begging for money from people around the central business district. He said many of them came from established homes.
