Kabwe residents want KYN project

- By NATION REPORTER

RESIDENTS of Bwacha constituency in Kabwe have welcomed area Member of Parliament (MP) Sydney Mushanga’s calls for the Know Your Neighbour (KYN) project to be rolled out in the area to help reduce crime levels.

Addressing a meeting in Muwowo East ward early during the week Mr Mushanga said there was need for the community take up the responsibility of curbing crime in the area using the KYN concept.

Mr Mushanga, who is Central Province Minister, said there was need for people in the community to be responsible over the crime by helping to identify and bringing culprits to book.

He said the crime reported in the constituency was not committed by outsiders but people within the community, saying that’s why there was need for the KYN project to be introduced in the area.

“The Know Your Neighbour project is cardinal in ending crime because it would help people in the community to easily identify bad elements and hold them accountable for their actions,” said Mr Mushanga.

The KNY project is a brain child of Kapwepwe ward 25 councillor Patrick Salubusa and aims to help communities fight crime and deal with the challenges of garbage.

The KYN project still being fined-tuned and is yet to be fully implemented in Lusaka and subsequently rolled out to other towns.

Mr Mushanga attributed the increase in crime in his constituency and in the country as a whole to moral breakdown in society.

He urged people in the constituency to uphold national values and principles to reduce lawlessness.

“As parents we no longer inculcate values and principles in our children and this has led to increase in crime levels in society,” Mr Mushanga said.

During the same meeting, a resident of Makululu ward, Eunice Banda expressed disappointment at the behaviour of a youth group calling themselves 26 niggers who were attacking people at night.

Ms Banda said once rolled out and implemented, the project would help to curb crime.

“Its quiet sad that this group of young people are harassing people that are old enough to be their parents. We have to come together and want to end this. So, his project is welcome,” said Ms Banda.

Another resident of Chililalila ward, Eddy Munkonge, said the Know Your Neighbour project was cardinal in curbing crime as it would move the community to action.
