MP advises Luano school on expansion

- By NATION REPORTER

MKUSHI south Member of Parliament (MP) Davies Chisopa has implored Twikatane Primary School administration in Luano to contribute 25% towards the building materials required for expansion of the school.

The MP’s advice follows a request by the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) for the MP to support the expansion programme of the school.

The request was made by PTA chairperson Mathews Mutakasha when the area (MP) visited the school. Mr Mutakasha informed Mr Chisopa that the school lacked adequate infrastructure and that it had 1,100 pupils against one by two classroom block.

Mr Mukatasha further informed the area MP that teachers were forced to rent houses in villages because of the shortage of accommodation.

He also explained that teachers were unable to conduct computer lessons because there was no ZESCO power supply at the learning institution.

“Teachers are finding it difficult to teach computer lessons because the school has no ZESCO power and yet power lines pass through the school premises,” Mr Mutakasha said.

He also thanked Mr Chisopa for donating pupils’ text books, saying the gesture would go a long way in improving learning.

And a grade six pupil Mathews Musonda told the MP that pupils lacked adequate desks and other necessities.

In response, Mr Chisopa said the school would be 100 percent funded for expansion under Constituency Development Fund (CDF) as long as the community contributed 25 percent towards the building materials.

He also asked the School authority to get a quotation for power installation from ZESCO.

“Organise 25 percent towards the building materials and get ZESCO power installation quotation, the school will be funded 100 percent under CDF,” Mr. Chisopa advised.

Meanwhile, Central Province permanent secretary Chanda Ka- bwe says government is striving to ensure youths were empowered.

Mr Kabwe said this in a speech read for him by Mkushi District Commissioner (DC) Luka Mwamba during the official opening of the Zambia Association for Technology Education (ZATE,) National conference held in the area.

Mr Kabwe cited the design and technology programme as one of the youth empowerment initiatives. He said under the initiative, the Ministry of General Education had bought tools and equipment for most schools following an outcry from ZATE and other stakeholders.

“Safety becomes of importance in the sense that all pupils concerned will be protected in the quest to develop good products for the industry.

The PS added explained that ZATE focused on design and technology which included: graphic communication, manufacturing materials, systems technology and entrepreneurship in the new curriculum.

Mr Kabwe said pupils would be exposed to the current technologies in design and product making and that the products would help tackle some of the challenges.

He said the ZATE would also equip the pupils with entrepreneurship skills and on how to venture into businesses.
