… sensitise residents on nuisance law
By NATION REPORTER LOCAL overnment Minister incent Mwale has directed all local authorities in the country to undertake a programme of sensitiz ing all their residents on the Local overnment Street ending and Nuisances Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 12 of 2018 . The SI was issued by Government to address the deteriorating quality of the environment which had continued to contribute to the loss of life, thereby impacting negatively on the Sustainable Development of the country. Mr Mwale urged local authority leaders to ensure that their residents are aware of Government’s vision to keep all areas in a clean safe and healthy environment as they embark on the enforcement of the SI to ensure and enhance compliance to the law. “This SI has strengthened the offences and penalties through the revision of the fee Units that would be paid by the people that would be found disobeying the law on cleanliness, safety and health environment of our communities, towns, municipalities and cities, therefore all local authorities should ensure that their people are well sensitized using various forms of communication,” Mr Mwale said. He added that if people were well informed on the SI, a clean, safe and healthy environment for all areas across the country was guaranteed to the benefit of the people. Mr Mwale said Government expect all local authority leaders to be on top of things by serving the people diligently by putting their call to national duty and service first. “We expect every leader to ensure that all residents in their areas under their jurisdiction live in clean, safe and healthy environment as the case should be. “Failure, to which they will be failing in the performance of their duty and the Government will be left with no option but to take appropriate action including disciplinary action,” he said.
