Lungu launches tree planting

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has emphasized the importance of planting trees as they have the potential to contribute to the economic developmen­t of the country.

President Lungu said his government recognised the importance of trees, particular­ly their contributi­on to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and reduction of climate change impacts.

The Head of State said this yesterday when he launched the Zambia Plant a Million trees initiative themed “Growing money from trees” at Kapasa Makasa University in Chinsali, Muchinga Province.

He said his government was committed to protecting the environmen­t hence the launch of the project.

President Lungu explained that the project was aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change that had adversely affected the environmen­t as well as creating wealth for Zambians.

The President noted that cutting down of trees threatened the security and economy of the country.

He said Zambia was one of the most forested country and that there was need to protect the trees.

President Lungu added that his government wanted communitie­s and all stakeholde­rs to get involved in the tree replanting exercise. He also directed Lands and Natural Resources Minister Jean Kapata to work with other line ministries to ensure the project was a success.

The Head of State touched down at Kapasa Makasa University at around 10:30 hours to a thunderous welcome.

Chinsali residents and PF supporters thronged the university to catch a glimpse of President Lungu who was welcomed by Muchinga Province Minister Malozo Sichone, senior government and PF officials.
