Two pupils ponder on toilet project
By NATION REPORTER TWO pupils have come up with a project module to help construct a toilet ablution block at Saint Theresa Community School in Lusaka’s Katuba Chikumbi farm block which is being sponsored by various companies under corporate social responsibility.
The duo, Pierre-Jacques Nortje aged 10 and Teija Richter aged 11 both pupils at Lusaka International Community School (LICS) in Roma were assigned to do a school project and focused their attention on the toilet project.
A fundraising venture was organised on Saturday which was well attended by members of the community and sponsors such as Quantum Foods Zambia who donated eggs.
In an interview, PierreJacques said he decided to do something about the few pit latrines against 585 pupils at the dilapidated community school following the recent outbreak of cholera.
“So basically we were assigned to do a project module under various categories and decided to focus on St. There- sa Community School which is in a dilapidated condition and has few toilets.
It is gratifying that various companies such as Base Build, Simba Milling, California Beverages, Farm Feed and Simmers have come on board to support this initiative,” he said.
And outgoing head teacher Tresford Mulenga thanked the companies for supporting the project.
Mr. Mulenga urged other firms to emulate and join the sponsors saying if children can do something to help the community the firms could even do more.
He appealed to Government to take over the community school and help construct a 4 by 2 classroom block as it was offering education to many pupils in Katuba and the surrounding community.
