Ndola DEBS prods teachers

-

By NATION REPORTER TEACHERS have been urged to adequately understand their teaching areas to curb “the much-talked-about” illiteracy among them, Ndola district education board secretary Terry Changwe has said.

Mr Changwe noted that the Ministry of Education had invested so much in the continuous professional development of teachers.

He said in an interview with the Daily Nation in Ndola yesterday that the continuous professional development activities were aimed at ensuring that teachers delivered efficiently in classes.

“When it comes to issues of delivering in class, we have in service activities to carry out continuous professional development so that teachers understand their teaching areas and content of their subject areas.

“This development exercise is a continuous process as it strives to ensure that quality education is provided to the learners in schools,” he said.

Last week, Teaching Service Commission chairman Stanley M’hango announced that the commission had discovered that there were teachers who could not read and write properly.

But according to Mr Changwe, when teachers graduate from tertiary institutions and join the education system, they were well oriented to ensure that proficient people teach in schools. He said while a teacher could acquire a degree, diploma or certificate, they were required to continue learning and researching.

Mr Changwe therefore, urged teachers to constantly study and actively get involved in research work to ensure that they promoted the image of the teaching profession in the country.
