Zambia, Japan seal pact
ZAMBIA and Japan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaborative relationship between companies for the exploration and development of mineral resources such as Cobalt and Copper.
The MoU envisages technical, information exchange, promotion of mineral resources investment cooperation between the two states.
The agreement was signed on the side-lines of the Japan-Africa Public Private Economic Forum, currently taking place in Johannesburg.
Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Richard Musukwa, signed on behalf of Zambia and Japan was represented by president of Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), Tetsuhiro Hosono. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr Musukwa said Zambia would need to enhance its technology and skills in the mining sector through its cooperation with Japan.
In a statement from Zambia High Commission in Pretoria South Africa, Mr Musukwa noted that Zambia's vision was to ensure that exploitation of its natural resources benefited the country and was a major driver to the development of the country.
And Mr Hosono said Japan was keen to bring its world renowned technology in smelter technology, geo-sensing technology for base metals to help bring skills and knowledge to Zambia in the sector.
