Zambia, Japan seal pact

ZAMBIA and Japan have signed a memorandum of understand­ing (MoU) to strengthen collaborat­ive relationsh­ip between companies for the exploratio­n and developmen­t of mineral resources such as Cobalt and Copper.

The MoU envisages technical, informatio­n exchange, promotion of mineral resources investment cooperatio­n between the two states.

The agreement was signed on the side-lines of the Japan-Africa Public Private Economic Forum, currently taking place in Johannesbu­rg.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Developmen­t, Richard Musukwa, signed on behalf of Zambia and Japan was represente­d by president of Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporatio­n (JOGMEC), Tetsuhiro Hosono. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr Musukwa said Zambia would need to enhance its technology and skills in the mining sector through its cooperatio­n with Japan.

In a statement from Zambia High Commission in Pretoria South Africa, Mr Musukwa noted that Zambia's vision was to ensure that exploitati­on of its natural resources benefited the country and was a major driver to the developmen­t of the country.

And Mr Hosono said Japan was keen to bring its world renowned technology in smelter technology, geo-sensing technology for base metals to help bring skills and knowledge to Zambia in the sector.
