Mawere prods media
THE development agenda in the Eastern Province requires positive media coverage in order to reach its full potential, says Chipata Central Member of Parliament (MP) Moses Mawere.
He said development was a product of collaborative efforts among various stakeholders, including the media.
Mr Mawere, who is also Sport, Youth and Child development Minister, was speaking during World Press Freedom Day commemoration in Chipata on Thursday.
“The media has a big role to play in fostering accountability and also in providing checks and balances. These jobs we have today, we may not have them tomorrow and we live as one. And that calls for us to work together,” he said.
Mr Mawere stressed the need for the media to guard against
manipulative elements whose aim was to disrupt government programmes.
He said Chipata and Eastern province as a whole had made positive strides towards unlocking new business opportunities for the benefit of the people.
“We all have a duty to serve our country and it all starts with what
we are doing in our communities. Leaving a legacy is an important issue we all desire to do.” He said.
The MP urged all media houses to be objective and professional in their reporting.
