Man dies af­ter be­ing hit by po­lice ve­hi­cle

A 50 YEAR old Zim­bab­wean na­tional sus­pected to have been in a drunken state has been de­tained by po­lice in Sol­wezi for al­legedly caus­ing an ac­ci­dent which led to the death of a pedes­trian.

The ac­ci­dent hap­pened on Tues­day around 17:20 hours at Shafilundu area, 6 kilo­me­tres west of Saint Dorothy along the Sol­wezi Chin­gola road.

North Western Province Com­mis­sioner of po­lice, Hud­son Na­machila has con­firmed the de­vel­op­ment in a state­ment re­leased to the Daily Na­tion in Sol­wezi yes­ter­day.

Mr Na­machila ex­plained that the sus­pect, Em­manuel Chi­tongo who ear­lier caused an­other road ac­ci­dent, at­tacked In­spec­tor Zulu who was rush­ing ac­ci­dent vic­tims to the hos­pi­tal and in the process caus­ing the ve­hi­cle to lost con­trol and hit a pedes­trian.

Mr Na­machila ex­plained that the po­lice of­fi­cer, Misheck Zulu aged 41 who was driv­ing a Nis­san Pa­trol, regis­tra­tion num­ber ZP 3878, hit a pedes­trian, namely, Yoan Mwaiseni aged 30 of Ki­pampe vil­lage who was stand­ing off the road.

"Chi­tongo who was on the same ve­hi­cle in his drunken state at­tacked Zulu who strug­gled with the steer­ing wheel and in the process he (Zulu) lost con­trol of the ve­hi­cle, went off the road and hit the deceased,” he said.

He said Chi­tongo has since been de­tained in po­lice cus­tody to help po­lice with in­ves­ti­ga­tions.

"The vic­tim sus­tained both frac­tured legs and later died at St Dorothy dis­trict health cen­tre,” Mr Na­machila said.
