Man dies after being hit by police vehicle

A 50 YEAR old Zimbabwean national suspected to have been in a drunken state has been detained by police in Solwezi for allegedly causing an accident which led to the death of a pedestrian.

The accident happened on Tuesday around 17:20 hours at Shafilundu area, 6 kilometres west of Saint Dorothy along the Solwezi Chingola road.

North Western Province Commission­er of police, Hudson Namachila has confirmed the developmen­t in a statement released to the Daily Nation in Solwezi yesterday.

Mr Namachila explained that the suspect, Emmanuel Chitongo who earlier caused another road accident, attacked Inspector Zulu who was rushing accident victims to the hospital and in the process causing the vehicle to lost control and hit a pedestrian.

Mr Namachila explained that the police officer, Misheck Zulu aged 41 who was driving a Nissan Patrol, registrati­on number ZP 3878, hit a pedestrian, namely, Yoan Mwaiseni aged 30 of Kipampe village who was standing off the road.

"Chitongo who was on the same vehicle in his drunken state attacked Zulu who struggled with the steering wheel and in the process he (Zulu) lost control of the vehicle, went off the road and hit the deceased,” he said.

He said Chitongo has since been detained in police custody to help police with investigat­ions.

"The victim sustained both fractured legs and later died at St Dorothy district health centre,” Mr Namachila said.
