RAID YIELDS 6 GRZ VEHICLES

- By NATION REPORTER

A TEAM of Government transport control unit that swung into action last night checking on the abuse of Government vehicles impounded six motor vehicles found in irregular places, SXbOiF reOationV offiFer 1GXbi Mvula has said. Mr Mvula said out of the six vehicles, the first to be impounded was found parked at Kabwata¶s Cheers shop in a rather disguise manner, as though the driver was buying commodities from the supermarket. %ut after a team led by controller of Government transport Ernest Kunda waited for over an hour to see the driver but in vain, he decided to clump the vehicle and later towed it to the parking area at the Ministry of Works and Supply for safety. Mr Mvula said in a statement that this happened after Minister of Works and Supply Felix Mutati joined the team in Kabwata and expressed dismay at the conduct of some public servants who he observed had the appetite to abuse public resources.

The vehicle ABK 2739 a Mistubish Pajero was discovered to be in custody of a Mr Malambo from the Auditor General¶s 2ffice in Livingstone, according to Mr Mvula.

Mr Mvula said Mr Mutati regretted that an auditor whose duty was to remind the government on abuse of resources, happened to have parked a GRZ vehicle in an irregular place when his position entailed accountability of public resources.

He said Mr Mutati explained that Government would not stop anyone from having entertainment but that anyone who wanted to do so, should use their personal cars as opposed to public resources, Mr Mvula added.

Mr Mvula said Mr Mutati declared that the night operations would also continue side by side with the weekend ones until people¶s mindset changed for the better.

Mr Mvula said the minister is of the view that this was not a mission to inconvenience anyone but a reminder to safeguard public resources which are purchased using tax payers money at high cost. 2n %urma Road, another vehicle was impounded near Arackan Barracks and the driver had difficulties to explain why he was driving it without authorisation, Mr Mvula said. Mr Mvula said the driver ended up giving conÀicting statements that he had bought the vehicle when in actual fact he had not even paid anything.
