ABORTIONS KILL MANY GIRLS, CHIEFTAINESS

- By NATION REPORTER

ABORTIONS have caused the deaths of many young girls in chief Nyanjes’ area in Sinda district of Eastern Province, Chieftainess Nyanje of the Nsenga people has disclosed. The chieftainess said her chiefdom was concerned with the number of abortions in her area being induced by cruel people who provided herbs to the young girls.

Speaking in Ching’ombe Ward in Sinda district during an anti-child marriage campaign organized by Regional PsychoSocial Initiative Program (REPSSI) last Saturday, the Chieftainess, who was represented by her senior induna, Scout Phiri, said abortions in her area had caused a lot of misery as many young lives had been lost while others were living miserable lives.

“Many girls are living miserable lives due to psychological and physiological problems associated with abortions. I am warning those who will be found wanting for dealing in such illegal abortions that they will be fined a cow before being handed over to police,” Chieftainess N yanje said.

She also said the use of sex boosting herbs had also caused many problems amongst youths who ended up misbehaving.

And nyanje zonal head teacher Milton Zulu advised parents to spend more time with their children to counsel them in order to build a better future for them.

Mr Zulu said that if parents failed to discipline their children by teaching them good morals, it would be difficult for other partners like teachers in schools to teach them academic concepts.

But one of the youths, Thaulo Banda, who attended the meeting blamed some parents for inÀuencing their children into early marriages, teenage pregnancy and abortion because they had allegedly failed to give true love to the children.

Meanwhile, Ching’ombe Ward Councillor Stephen Tembo advised parents to ensure that they supported their children and that girls who had become pregnant should be encouraged to go back to school in line with governments’ re-entry policy.

And REPSSI representative Richard Luo said the best choices and decisions could not be made by N GO s as their ro was merely to help communities find lasting solutions to the problems they faced such as teenage pregnancies, early marriages and other vices.
