Chisokone traders challenged
GOVERNMENT has directed market association leaders to make thorough consultations with their members at Chisokone market in Kitwe over the construction of a modern facility.
The State has said it will not impose construction of a modern market if traders are comfortable with the current state of the market.
Local Government Minister Vincent Mwale said this in Kitwe yesterday.
Mr Mwale said government's intention of constructing a modern market was aimed at improving hygiene and ensuring that it had quality infrastructure.
The Minister was speaking at the Civic Centre when he met leaders of market associations and other stakeholders to discuss government's intention of constructing a modern market.
"We are a listening government. We will do what you will say. If you don't want a modern market at Chisokone market, we will take the ideas elsewhere. We will not impose a modern market on you,” he said.
Mr Mwale said government would not demolition the whole Chisokone market but would do it in phases.
"If you allow the construction of a modern market at Chisokone market, government is proposing that we start construction works in phases.
"This means that if one part is demolished to pave way for construction, then the affected people will be given an alternative place where to trade within Chisokone market while construction works are going on," he said.
After a thorough explanation by the Minister, most leaders of market associations supported the idea but appealed to Government to ensure all their concerns were addressed.
Mr Mwale advised market association leaders to go back and consult their members before they could make a decision on the matter.
He said government would not commence constructions of a modern market until market associations had thoroughly made consultations.
"Go back and consult your members on this matter. As government, we will be waiting for you to make a decision on the matter. It is up to you," he said.
