‘WE’RE LIVING IN FEAR OF CHOLERA RECURRENCE’

- By NATION REPORTER

WE are living in fear of a cholera recurrence in Chipata Compound because meat traders at Katambalala market are still selling their meat in unhygienic makeshift stands, a resident, Ronald Siwale has complained.

In an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday, Mr Siwale said the traders were selling their meat stocked on dirty makeshift tables filled with flies and next to pit latrines.

“My fear is that these people will bring back cholera because they do not care about hygiene standards. That is why President Edgar Lungu has re-launched the Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign for us as citizens to live in a good environment with good hygiene standards and practices,” Mr Siwale said.

At the peak of the cholera outbreak in January this year, government shut down churches, bars, markets and schools in many Lusaka townships until the cholera outbreak which hit the country in October last year was brought under control.

Government also embarked on a massive cholera control programme which saw the military being deployed across most of Lusaka as more than 70 people lost their lives and about 3,000 infected since the outbreak began.

President Edgar Lungu has since relaunched the make Zambia clean, green and health campaign with a call to Citizens to embrace the initiative.

The re-launch of the campaign is aimed at making cities, towns, public institutions and places clean to improve the health standards of all people.
