AN arresting officer yesterday told the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court that a man accused of possessing counterfeit K100 notes was apprehended when he attempted to deposit the fake bills at an MTN booth.
Oswald Nzala, of Town Centre police post, said the accused Mike Shimubondo was on February 2, 2018 in the process of depositing K1, 500 out of K3, 000 in fake notes when he was apprehended by the booth operator who later dragged him to the police post.
He said when the operator noticed that there was something unusual about the notes, he apprehended Shimubondo and dragged him to Town Center police post where he was detained.
“Upon arrival, following standard procedure I searched Mike Shimubondo for any evidence on him or weapons. I found another K1, 500 in fake notes in his front pockets,” Mr. Nzala said. He said during questioning, the accused revealed that he got the counterfeit money from his colleague by the name of Dominic Kalyazi who was allegedly on the run.
And Sargent Kings Ng’uni, 41, also of the same police post, said before knocking off from night duty, in the early hours of February 3, 2018, Shimubondo’s relatives told him that they had seen Kalyazi at the accused’s home in Misisi compound.
“After a tip from Shimubondo’s relatives who visited him in cells, I went to Misisi police post and found that they (police officers) had already captured Kalyazi and found K2, 100 in counterfeit notes on him,” he said.
He said Kalyazi was charged and convicted for possession of counterfeit notes in a different court.
Trial continues on June 29, 2018.
