Child marriages a cancer in Kasama
CHILD marriages have become a cancer derailing progress in Northern Province and require reinvigorated efforts to curb the vice in order to protect the girl child, a traditional leader in Kasama has said.
Speaking when Kasama Central Member of Parliament Kelvin Sampa paid a courtesy call on him at his palace, senior Chief Mwamba, who expressed gratitude to President Edgar Lungu for electrifying his chiefdom, pledged his total and unwavering support and resiliency towards ending child marriages.
Chief Mwamba commended Mr. Sampa for his continued support to traditional leaders across the country to curb child marriages.
“Child marriage is a cancer to their progress as chiefdoms, hence, the need for political will to curb the scourge. As traditional leaders, we are grateful to you for your continued support towards the fight against child marriages,” the chief said.
And Mr. Sampa told his royal highness that he remained committed to curb the prevalence of child marriages in his constituency and the country at large.
Mr. Sampa, who is also involved with a Zambian charity based in Southern Province named Musokotwane Compassion Mission Zambia (MCMZ) in curbing child marriages and meeting needs of survivors of child marriages, said concerted efforts were required to stump out the vice.
He pledged to continue to tailor and align his leadership model with traditional leaders and institutions aimed at bringing tangible development to girls and communities affected by child marriages.
He also assured the chief of his support and that of President Lungu in the chiefdom’s development endeavours.
