MATERO COUNCILLOR FIGHTS ALCOHOL ABUSE

- By NATION REPORTER

WE are also fighting alcohol abuse apart from responding to concerns on garbage and crime, says Kapwepwe ward 25 area councillor in Matero Constituency Mwamba Salubusa.

Mr Salubusa said alcohol abuse will be tackled through the Know Your Neighbour (KYN) project.

Mr. Salubusa said this on Sunday after the KYN Club members from Desai compound exercised citizen’s arrest on a named couple that allegedly neglected their children for the love of alcohol.

The couple is in custody at Lilanda Police Post.

According to Desai KYN club chairman Aaron Thewete, the couple is allegedly also in the habit of misbehaving whenever they take alcohol.

"We followed them but we found that they had already gone home and that is when we followed them home and indeed found them drinking beer and extremely drunk " Mr Thewete charged

With the support from the neighbours the couple was taken to Lilanda Police Post where the area councillor thanked the residents of Kapwepwe Ward for the citizen arrest.

"You have done well because we can't allow this public nuisance".

I know that the Know Your Neighbor Project is about garbage and crime related issues but it has to be extended to other issues if we want a better Kapwepwe ward and it has to start with you the neighbours", Mr Salubusa said.

Cabinet has since approved implementation of a national alcohol policy meant to curb alcohol abuse.

Cabinet approved the policy as it was concerned with high levels of alcohol abuse in the country.

According to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO) 22 percent of women in the country drunk excessively.
