IG wants to stop negative police perception

- By NATION REPORTER

LET’S endeavour to radically transform the negative perception the public has about the police service by adopting transparency in the discharge of our duties and employing effective communication to avoid being misunderstood, says the Inspector General of Police, Kakoma Kanganja.

Speaking during the launch of the direct deposit system at Lawenthal Hall in Ndola, Mr Kanganja advised police officers on the Copperbelt to avoid conniving with criminals.

He implored all the police officers not to compromise their integrity by engaging in corrupt practices.

He warned that those caught would not only lose their jobs but end up in prison.

“I urge the commissioner to ensure that all supervisors in the province identify areas within their jurisdictions requiring the presence of the police through foot and motorised patrols, setting up of police posts or stations and snap check points to book criminals engaging in crimes such as smuggling, copper thefts and gang groupings,” the IG said.

He said he was aware of the challenges the police faced such as low staffing levels, inadequate transport and equipment.

Mr Kanganja said government through the Ministry of Home Affairs was doing its level best to address and mitigate some of the bottle necks the service was facing.

Mr Kanganja also appealed to the officers to ensure firms avoided late banking, stating that revenue collected should be deposited in banks in good time.

The IG also urged the police officers to shy away partisan politics and to uphold human rights in the country.
