Police please deal decisively with notorious gangs

- Stephen J. Kapotwe

Dear Editor

I would like to put forward my great concern over the rising cases of gangsters’ especially in Lusaka and on the Copperbelt.

We have seen screaming headlines in the print media of notorious gangs such as Sons of the Devil, Tokota Boys, the Fluffies, 90 Niggas and so forth.

Innocent people have been beaten and robbed sometimes in broad day light by these notorious gangs.

Although Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has taken personal interest in the emerging culture of criminal gangs on the Copperbelt and set camp in Kitwe to help dismantle the criminal empires, I feel the IG should not have come out in the open because these gangsters now will know that cops are within the vicinity and they will not jump on their prey.

It is really saddening to note that Kitwe, the once quiet town and now hub of the Copperbelt can now record an increase in criminal gangs with notorious names that have been spreading terror among the residents.

Gangsterism has acquired some notoriety on the Copperbelt with citizens and law enforcement agencies seemingly powerless.

It is also becoming increasingly fearless in some townships of Lusaka where the same type of gangsterism has taken centre stage.

Most Lusaka residents fear to move as early as 18 hours for fear of being attacked especially in compounds like Kanyama, Kuku, Misisi, Bauleni, George and Chibolya.

Traders mostly women who go as early as 04 hours to Soweto market to buy goods are targets of these notorious gangs who pounce on them as they board minibuses.

While police are doing a commendable job I feel it is not enough because there is no way some people can be above the law and be let scott free attacking innocent people with impunity.

So ba police please up your game by ending this ruthless new crime wave on the Copperbelt and in Lusaka for citizens to live better lives.
