CHITALU RATED FIFTH ON SCORERS’ CHART

By SPORTS REPORTER ZAMBIA’S Godfrey “Ucar” Chitalu is rated fifth on the latest top internatio­nal goal scorers’ chart with 79 goals.

According to Sky Sports, Cristiano Ronald becomes second on the chart after his goal against Morocco in Wednesday’s World Cup fixture to aid Portugal into the round of 16.

On the latest chart, former Bayern Munich forward, Iran’s Ali Daei tops with 109 goals, in a 13year internatio­nal career between 1993 and 2006.

Ronaldo is second with 85 goals, Hungarian forward Ferenc Puskas took third position with 84 goals. In fourth place is Japanese Kunishige Kamamoto with 80 goals, a goal better than Zambia’s sensationa­l striker Chitalu.

In sixth and seventh place was Hussein Saeed of Iraq -78 goals and Brazilian Pele -78 goals respective­ly.

The late Chitalu, is regarded as Zambia’s best player ever who emerged on Zambian soil with a tag of 107 goals in all competitio­ns. The renowned Kabwe Warriors striker was known to have caused turmoil in the defenders.

On May 25 1981, Chitalu was bestowed with the Insignia of Honour by first republican president Kenneth Kaunda for his contributi­on to Zambian football.

Upon retirement, Chitalu took to coaching and was in charge of the Zambia national team when the entire squad perished in a plane crash off the coast of Gabon on April 27 1993.
