New Kazungula council lodge boosts revenue
By NATION REPORTER THE decision by Kazungula District Council to construct a lodge to supplement its revenue base has started yielding results.
The project which started a few years ago has been completed and is now awaiting commissioning by Local Government Minister Vincent Mwale.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation in Kazungula on Thursday, Council Secretary Given Muleya said, the lodge had started operating and was contributing to the local authority’s revenue.
Mr Muleya disclosed that the council had spent over K3 million on the construction of the structure and buying of furniture.
He said that part of the money which was used for the project came from the Local Government Equalisation Fund which the ministry gives to all the councils.
“We used K1.5 million the fund under capital expenditure. So far, the lodge is in operation and we are just waiting for its commissioning.
The main essence of the lodge is to create employment for the local people and also increase revenue for the council,” he said.
Mr Muleya said before then, most travellers and visitors intending to visit Kazungula were having difficulties finding accommodation but now, this would be a thing of the past. “The council thought of the need to complement its revenue base by putting up this lodge. We are using this as a recreation facility for the community around. We also have plans to expand the room capacity by the next year.
