Mulongoti backs calls to restore Chiluba’s immunity, property
IT is unfair for the government to delay the restoration of late President Frederick Chiluba’s immunity posthumously and properties returned to his family when he died an innocent man, says Peoples Party president Mike Mulongoti.
But Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, Dora Siliya last Wednesday told journalists during a press briefing that she would soon engage Secretary to the Cabinet Ronald Msiska on the matter, a case which is yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, Mr Mulongoti said it was commendable that people had called for Dr Chiluba’s immunity to be restored but the government needed to act on the matter as Dr Chiluba was cleared of all charges by the courts of law.
He pointed out that the immunity for the fourth republican president, Mr Rupiah Banda, was restored immediately after the courts upheld his innocence in corruption charges while President Chiluba’s case was still being debated.
Mr Mulongoti said the late President was a pillar in the democracy the country was enjoying and it was only fair that his contribution was recognised.
He said Mr Banda was treated well through the restoration of his immunity and it was sad that Government was delaying honouring and taking care of Dr Chiluba’s family.
