LUSAMBO WARNS VENDORS

- By NATION REPORTER

WE will not allow any street vendor to disturb road works on Lusaka’s Lumumba Road, Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo has warned.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Lusambo said it was dangerous for vendors to continue trading where road works were in progress, adding that no one would be spared regardless of their political affliction.

He reminded the vendors that street vending was illegal by law adding that he would not allow the situation to disturb the on-going road works in /usaka.

“As provincial minister I can only advise them to leave the streets in harmony and will not use force, but if they are not going to move out we are going to move in as government and ensure that the road works are not disturbed due to few individuals that want to bring anarchy in the city,´ said 0r /usambo.

A check by the Daily Nation found traders still selling along Lumumba Road despite the ongoing road works.

One of the traders, Peter Chalwe, said he had opted to sell his goods along the road because there was no space in markets “We know it is dangerous to trade here because of the machinery that is being used for the rehabilitation of the road but where do you think we can go and trade from? We want to provide for our families too,” he said.

He advised the Lusaka City Council to allocate them with proper trading spaces for them to move away from the road. Another trader, Bertha Mulenga said her colleagues would only move if they were given alternative space to trade from.

Some Lusaka residents have since called on President Edgar Lungu to consider recalling military personnel to control street vending which has resurfaced in the city.
