CHOMA STREET VENDORS BACK

- By NATION REPORTER

STREET vending in Choma, is slowly thriving and finding its way in selected parts of the central business district (CBD).

Street vendors have come back on the corridors of shops along the Great North Road commonly known as the Livingstone-Lusaka road.

A check by the Daily Nation in the CBD over the weekend found vendors trading on the corridors of some shops including Spar on the northend of the main road.

Most of those who have gone back to the streets were dealing in ready to eat foodstuffs and selling of second-hand clothes and mobile phones.

In an interview with the Daily Nation in Choma, most of those talked to claimed that the Makalanguzu Market where they were relocated was congested because it was too small to accommodate everyone.

The traders claimed that as a result, some of them felt going back to the streets was the only option if they wanted to have something to feed their families.

“The problem we have is that the market is too small to accommodate everyone so some of us prefer to trade on the corridors because there is no congestion like it is in the market. We asked the council to find another place where we can trade from but up to now there is no feedback,” one of the vendors claimed.

It was revealed that Choma Municipal Council has been struggling to keep the momentum in keeping the provincial capital clean and healthy.
